Artificial Turf for Indoor Spaces
Artificial turf isn’t just for outdoor lawns anymore. Across Georgia, businesses and homeowners are bringing turf inside for applications that range from practical to creative to downright surprising. Indoor turf installations are one of the fastest-growing segments of our business, and for good reason—they solve problems and create environments that traditional flooring simply can’t match.
Fitness and Training Facilities
The most common indoor turf application is in gyms and training facilities. Speed and agility turf—that short, dense, flat turf you see in professional training centers—provides the perfect surface for sled pushes, sprints, agility drills, and functional fitness training. It offers more traction than rubber flooring while being softer on joints than concrete.
CrossFit gyms, personal training studios, and sports performance centers throughout metro Atlanta are installing turf lanes and turf areas as centerpiece training surfaces. A typical gym turf installation is 15-40 feet long and 6-15 feet wide, with painted yard lines or training markers for functional use. The short pile height (typically 3/4 inch or less) keeps the surface firm for athletic movement while still providing cushioning.
For home gyms—increasingly popular in Georgia since 2020—a turf section adds versatility that rubber mats alone can’t provide. Even a small 6x12 foot turf area in a garage gym opens up training options significantly.
Children’s Playrooms
Indoor turf in children’s playrooms and play areas creates a soft, safe, and visually engaging surface that kids love. It’s warmer and softer than tile or hardwood, easier to clean than carpet, and more durable than any traditional flooring option. Children can run, tumble, and play on turf without the injury concerns of hard surfaces or the hygiene concerns of carpet.
Commercial indoor play spaces, children’s museums, and family entertainment centers use turf for open play areas, mini sports zones, and sensory play spaces. The bright green color naturally energizes indoor spaces and creates a sense of being outdoors even when you’re inside—something that benefits children’s mood and activity levels.
Office and Commercial Spaces
Progressive offices and coworking spaces are using turf as a design element that communicates creativity and relaxation. A turf area in an office lobby, break room, or meeting space creates a conversation piece and a welcoming atmosphere that traditional commercial carpet can’t achieve. Some Atlanta tech companies have installed turf in brainstorming rooms and informal meeting areas to encourage creative thinking and collaboration.
Retail spaces use turf to create eye-catching displays and themed environments. Pet stores, outdoor recreation shops, sports equipment retailers, and children’s clothing stores all use turf to reinforce their brand identity and create memorable shopping experiences.
Indoor Putting Greens
Indoor putting greens are a popular home and office installation. A putting green in a basement, spare bedroom, or office gives you practice access regardless of weather—and in Georgia, that means year-round practice without the summer heat or winter cold. Custom contours and multiple hole positions make indoor greens surprisingly challenging and engaging.
Corporate offices install putting greens in common areas as employee amenities, and some restaurants and entertainment venues use them as customer attractions. The installation is straightforward on any level indoor floor—foam padding under contoured plywood creates the undulations, with putting green turf over the top.
Indoor Installation Differences
Indoor turf installation differs from outdoor in several ways. There’s no excavation or base preparation—the turf goes directly over the existing floor with a pad underneath. Infill is often omitted for indoor installations (no wind, no UV, and the turf doesn’t need the weight that outdoor infill provides). Adhesive is used instead of nails for attachment to prevent floor damage. And ventilation matters—indoor turf in a poorly ventilated space can develop a noticeable odor from the materials, especially when new. Adequate airflow resolves this quickly.
The turf products used indoors are often different from outdoor products. Shorter pile heights, different backing materials, and specific color options designed for indoor lighting conditions. We select products based on the specific indoor application—gym turf, putting green turf, and decorative turf are all different products optimized for their use case.
Maintenance Indoors
Indoor turf is even easier to maintain than outdoor turf because it’s not exposed to weather, UV, or outdoor debris. Regular vacuuming keeps the surface clean. Spot cleaning with mild soap handles spills. Periodic brushing keeps fibers upright—particularly important in gym settings where heavy equipment and foot traffic can flatten fibers in patterns.
Indoor turf also lasts longer than outdoor turf because UV degradation—the primary wear factor for outdoor turf—isn’t a concern indoors. Indoor installations can last 20+ years with proper care, making them an excellent long-term investment.
