Artificial Turf Under Trampolines and Play Equipment
Kids playing on trampolines and play equipment is one of childhood's joys. But underneath that equipment, natural grass gets pulverized. Within one season, you're left with muddy, bare patches that are ugly, unsafe, and practically impossible to maintain. After 20+ years installing artificial turf in North Georgia, I've seen thousands of parents solve this problem the smart way: quality artificial turf beneath play equipment.
This is one of the most practical uses for artificial turf, and the benefits go far beyond just maintaining appearances.
The Problem with Natural Grass Under Equipment
Constant jumping on a trampoline compacts the soil and kills the grass beneath the jump area. The surrounding areas get worn down by landing zones and kids running around. Within months, you have a muddy, unsafe area that becomes a liability.
The maintenance treadmill never stops: reseed the area, wait for it to establish, watch kids destroy it again. It's exhausting and never-ending.
Beyond aesthetics, bare muddy areas create safety issues. Kids slip on mud. Shoes track mud into the house. During rain, the whole area becomes a safety hazard.
Why Artificial Turf is Perfect for Play Areas
Durability Under Constant Impact
Quality artificial turf from LawnLogic Turf is engineered to handle constant impact, jumping, and running without degrading. The blade structure is designed for high-traffic use, and the substrate provides excellent impact absorption. Your turf under the trampoline will look the same at the end of summer as it did in June.
Safety Surface
This is critical. Artificial turf eliminates muddy, slippery areas entirely. Kids have reliable footing. No more dangerous slick patches around equipment. The surface is consistent and safe regardless of weather.
Immediate Use After Rain
Natural grass areas stay muddy for hours after rain. Artificial turf with proper installation drains completely within minutes. Your kids can jump on the trampoline in the afternoon after morning rain without any mud concerns.
No Maintenance
No reseeding, no fertilizing, no disease management. The area stays beautiful without any work. No more fighting to keep grass alive in a high-impact zone.
Even Surface for Equipment
Play equipment needs a level, stable base. Artificial turf installation includes proper grading and substrate. The surface is perfectly even and stable for trampolines, swing sets, climbing structures, and anything else.
Installation Considerations for Play Areas
Substrate Design
Play areas need exceptional substrate design because of the constant impact stress. We install professional-grade substrate that's properly compacted and sloped for drainage. The foundation needs to handle repeated jumping, running, and equipment stress without settling or moving.
Drainage is Critical
High-traffic play areas get a lot of concentrated water from rain. Proper drainage design ensures water moves away quickly, eliminating puddles and muddy zones. Our installation approach uses permeable substrate and proper slope to direct water away from play zones.
Edge Containment
Play areas need proper edging to prevent turf edges from unraveling under constant use. We use professional edging systems that contain the turf and handle the stress of foot traffic at the perimeter.
Space Calculation for Equipment
You need sufficient turf space around and under equipment for safety and functionality. Here's a practical guide:
Trampolines
At minimum, install turf that extends 6-8 feet beyond the trampoline perimeter. This covers the landing zone and provides safety space. For 12-foot trampolines, that's at least a 24-by-24-foot turf area. A 14-footer needs roughly 28-by-28 feet of turf coverage.
Swing Sets
Install turf at least 8-10 feet in front and behind the swing path. This covers potential fall zones. Wider coverage is always safer.
Climbing Structures
Create a turf base that extends at least 6 feet beyond the structure perimeter. Climbing structures often have unpredictable fall patterns, so generous coverage is wise.
Turf Specifications for Play Areas
Play areas have specific turf requirements different from aesthetic-focused yards:
Blade Height
Use 2-2.5 inch blade height for play areas. The extra height provides better impact absorption and cushioning. It's more forgiving of footprints and offers better shock absorption for jumping.
Blade Type
Texture-blend blades work best for play areas. The combination of monofilament and slit-film provides durability while maintaining reasonable aesthetic appeal.
Wear Rating
Select turf specifically rated for high-traffic commercial or sports use. This ensures the product is engineered for the kind of punishment play areas experience.
Pet-Friendly Considerations
Many families have dogs that also use play areas. Our pet-friendly artificial turf options are excellent for this situation. They handle both kid activity and dog use while maintaining excellent drainage and easy cleaning.
Installation Process
Installation for play areas follows the same professional process as residential yards, but with extra attention to drainage and substrate durability. We remove existing vegetation, grade the area properly, install professional substrate with ideal compaction, and then install premium artificial turf with careful seaming.
The entire process takes 2-4 days depending on area size. Once installation is complete, your kids can use it immediately.
Long-Term Value
Beyond the obvious safety and convenience benefits, artificial turf under play equipment offers real financial value. You're eliminating years of futile grass maintenance, reseeding costs, and wasted effort. For most families, the cost difference between artificial turf and 5+ years of maintenance is minimal—and artificial turf is far superior.
Your play area remains safe, beautiful, and functional year-round, summer heat to winter cold.
