Artificial Turf vs Pavers: Which is Right for Your Georgia Yard?

By Dusty Broadhead | February 21, 2026

When Georgia homeowners decide to upgrade their outdoor space, the conversation often comes down to artificial turf, pavers, or some combination of both. Each material has clear strengths, and the right choice depends entirely on how you use your yard. Here’s the honest comparison.

Cost Comparison

Artificial turf installed professionally runs $8-$15 per square foot in the North Georgia market. Paver installation runs $10-$25 per square foot depending on the material—concrete pavers on the lower end, natural stone on the higher end. For large areas, turf is typically the more affordable option. For smaller, defined spaces like a patio or walkway, pavers may be comparable or even cheaper.

Where turf wins on cost is long-term maintenance. Turf costs $200-$500 per year to maintain. Pavers need periodic re-sanding of joints ($200-$400), sealing every 2-3 years ($1-$3/sq ft), and weed removal from joints. Over a 15-year span, turf’s total cost of ownership is usually 20-30% lower than pavers.

Appearance and Feel

This is subjective, but there are clear trade-offs. Turf provides that lush, green lawn look year-round. It’s soft underfoot, comfortable for bare feet, and creates a natural, inviting feel. Pavers offer a hardscape aesthetic—clean, structured, and architectural. They come in countless colors, patterns, and textures that can complement any home style.

The texture difference is important for how you use the space. Turf is where you want to sit, lay down, let kids roll around, or let dogs run. Pavers are where you put furniture, grills, fire pits, and dining areas. Each material excels in different roles.

Durability in Georgia’s Climate

Both materials handle Georgia’s climate well, but with different vulnerabilities. Turf’s main challenge is UV exposure and heat—quality products handle this well, but cheap turf degrades faster in our intense sun. Pavers’ main challenge is Georgia’s freeze-thaw cycles (yes, we get them in North Georgia) and the heavy clay soil that shifts underneath. Poorly installed pavers on clay soil will settle unevenly within a few years.

Quality turf lasts 15-20 years. Quality paver installations last 25-30+ years with proper maintenance. If absolute longevity is your priority, pavers win—but the maintenance cost over that extended lifespan narrows the gap.

Heat Performance

Both turf and pavers get hot in Georgia summers, but differently. Turf surface temperatures can reach 120-150°F in direct sun. Dark-colored pavers can reach similar temperatures. Light-colored pavers stay cooler—100-120°F in the same conditions. If heat is a primary concern, light-colored pavers have an advantage. However, turf can be cooled instantly with a hose rinse, while pavers retain heat longer.

Drainage

Properly installed artificial turf drains at 30-60+ inches per hour—far more than any Georgia storm can produce. Permeable pavers also drain well if installed with a proper gravel base. Standard pavers with tight joints are less permeable and rely on slope and edge drainage. In Georgia’s clay soil with our heavy summer rains, drainage should be a top consideration for either material.

When Turf is the Better Choice

When Pavers are the Better Choice

The Best Answer: Use Both

Honestly, the most beautiful outdoor spaces we install combine turf and pavers strategically. A typical design might use pavers for the patio, walkways, and fire pit area, with turf filling the open lawn space, play zones, and pet areas. The contrast between the green turf and the textured pavers creates visual interest that neither material achieves alone.

The key to a successful combination is the transition detail. Where turf meets pavers, the edge needs to be clean and precise. We use aluminum or steel edging installed flush with the paver surface so the turf butts up against a solid, clean border. Done right, the transition looks intentional and professional. Done wrong, it looks like two materials that don’t belong together.

We design and install complete outdoor spaces that integrate turf with pavers, natural stone, and plantings. The best results come from planning the entire space as one cohesive design rather than making material decisions for each area independently.
