Backyard Sport Court Installation: Basketball, Tennis & More

Professional backyard sports court installation

When families in North Georgia ask me what's the single best investment they can make in their backyard, I tell them: a dedicated sports court. In my 20+ years of outdoor installation work, I've seen how a properly built basketball, tennis, or pickleball court transforms not just a property, but a family's lifestyle. Kids spend more time outside, stay active, and develop real athletic skills. Parents have a reason to invite friends over. Properties increase in value. It's one of those rare improvements that delivers on multiple levels.

Why Backyard Sports Courts Make Sense in Georgia

Georgia's climate is actually ideal for sports court installations. We have a long season where courts are usable—often 9-10 months out of the year. Unlike northern states where winter makes court surfaces unusable, Georgia families can maximize their investment. The mild winters mean minimal maintenance, and the warm summers create the perfect environment for kids and adults to stay active outdoors.

LawnLogic Turf has installed dozens of sports courts across Georgia and North Georgia. What I've learned is that the best courts are built with the right combination of surface material, base preparation, and ancillary features like good lighting and proper fencing.

Basketball Court Installation

Basketball courts are the most common request we receive. A regulation half-court is just 47 feet by 50 feet—surprisingly modest. A quarter-court (called a "3-on-3 court") is even smaller at about 35 by 35 feet. Most Georgia backyards can accommodate at least a quarter-court, and many can fit a full half-court.

Surface Options

Traditional asphalt is the budget option, running $15-$25 per square foot. However, asphalt cracks, fades, and requires regular maintenance in Georgia's heat. A higher-quality court uses modular synthetic tiles or specialty court surfacing that costs $30-$50 per square foot but lasts 10-15 years with minimal maintenance. The middle ground is a quality acrylic coating over asphalt, which runs $25-$35 per square foot and provides better durability than bare asphalt with less expense than premium surfaces.

Base Preparation

This is where most DIY basketball courts fail. Proper base preparation requires compacted stone, proper grading for drainage, and attention to settling issues. Our installations include 4-6 inches of compacted base material, ensuring the court will remain level and playable for years.

Lighting Considerations

A basketball court without lighting is essentially unusable after 6 PM. Quality outdoor sports lighting adds $3,000-$8,000 to the project but absolutely maximizes usage. LED sports lighting is the modern standard—efficient, bright, and reduced light pollution.

Tennis Court Installation

Tennis courts are larger (78 feet by 36 feet minimum) and require excellent drainage. Georgia's clay and clay-based soils can create water retention issues, which is why proper base preparation and surface selection are critical.

Tennis Court Surfaces

Traditional clay courts are beautiful but require constant maintenance—not practical for most residential Georgia properties. Hard courts (acrylic or asphalt-based) are more common and manageable, running $25-$40 per square foot. Grass courts (using high-quality artificial turf) have become increasingly popular and offer excellent playing characteristics with minimal maintenance.

At LawnLogic Turf, we frequently recommend premium artificial turf for tennis court surfaces. The surface plays similarly to traditional clay and grass courts, requires virtually no maintenance, and stands up beautifully to Georgia's weather extremes.

Pickleball Courts

Pickleball has exploded in popularity, and we've installed many dedicated courts across North Georgia. A pickleball court is just 20 by 44 feet—perfect for properties without room for tennis or basketball courts. Many homeowners use our backyard design services to fit multiple pickleball courts into their space.

Surface requirements are similar to tennis courts. We typically use acrylic hard court surfaces or modular tiles, which cost $20-$35 per square foot installed.

Critical Installation Factors

Proper Drainage

Georgia receives substantial rainfall, particularly in spring and summer. Every sports court must slope gently (typically 1% grade) to move water away quickly. We incorporate perimeter drainage systems and use premium base materials that won't shift or settle in Georgia's clay-based soils.

Size and Setback Considerations

Beyond the court itself, you need space for equipment, circulation, and safety. Check your HOA rules—some Georgia communities have restrictions on court installations. We've had projects delayed by HOA requirements or variance needs.

Sight Lines and Privacy

Consider how the court impacts your neighbors and property view. Strategic screening with fencing, hedging, or landscape elements can make a court feel more integrated into your property rather than an imposing structure.

Maintenance Reality

Synthetic surfaces and acrylic coatings require regular but minimal maintenance. Sweeping/blowing debris weekly, occasional pressure washing (quarterly), and recoating acrylic surfaces every 3-5 years keeps them in excellent condition. Artificial turf courts need occasional grooming and rinsing.

The key advantage of professional installation is that we use materials and methods that minimize maintenance. A $2,000 court built on compacted base with proper grading beats a $500 court that will crack and become unplayable within two years.

Cost Expectations

A basic half-court basketball court with quality asphalt surface runs $3,000-$6,000. Add quality acrylic coating and lighting, and you're at $8,000-$12,000. A regulation tennis court is $15,000-$25,000 depending on surface choice and amenities. These are significant investments, but they're less than a pool, increase property value, and deliver years of family enjoyment.

Making Your Decision

The best sports court for your property depends on available space, your family's actual sports interests, and budget. We've seen families build basketball courts that are rarely used, and we've seen modest pickleball courts that get daily usage. Be honest about what your family will actually use.
