1. Sub-Base Quality

Walk across the green in bare feet or golf shoes. Does it feel uniformly firm everywhere? Or are there soft spots — areas where your foot sinks slightly or where the surface feels spongy? Soft spots indicate inadequate compaction, usually because the installer used a hand tamper instead of a plate compactor, or didn't make enough compaction passes.

A properly compacted base should feel like putting on a concrete patio with a thin carpet on top — firm, consistent, no give. If it feels like putting on a mattress (soft, variable) the base wasn't done right.

2. Seaming Quality

Get down on your hands and knees at eye level and look across the surface. Can you see where two pieces of turf join? On a quality installation, seams should be virtually invisible — no visible gap, no direction change in the fibers, no ridge or valley along the seam line.

Common seaming failures: fibers cut between stitch rows (creating a visible gap), adhesive squeeze-out visible on the surface, grain direction change across the seam (fibers pointing different directions on each side), and buckling along the seam due to inadequate tension during installation.

3. Speed Consistency

Putt from multiple positions to the same target. Does the ball roll the same distance with the same stroke from different spots on the green? Inconsistency means infill is unevenly distributed — heavy in some areas (slow), light in others (fast). This is the single most common quality issue we see on greens installed without stimpmeter verification.

4. Edge Finishing

Look at where the green meets the surrounding landscape — the perimeter edge. Is there a clean, defined border? Is the turf secured tightly against the edging material with no gaps, lifting, or bunching? Are the nailer boards (the wooden borders that anchor the turf) hidden completely below the surface?

Poor edge finishing leads to turf lifting at the borders, infill washing out during rain, and a generally unfinished appearance that degrades over time.

5. Cup Installation

Drop a ball into the cup from about an inch above the rim. Does it drop cleanly, or does it catch on the edge, bounce off a shallow bottom, or rattle against a crooked liner? Set a level across the cup opening — it should be perfectly flush with the surrounding surface, not recessed or protruding.

Red Flags in Installer Marketing

When evaluating potential putting green installers, pay attention to how they market themselves. Some common claims deserve scrutiny:

"I'm a golfer, so I know what a great green should be"

Playing golf and building greens are completely different skill sets. A surgeon knows what a healthy body should look like — that doesn't qualify a patient to perform surgery because they've been healthy. Ask about construction experience specifically: compaction standards, drainage methodology, speed measurement protocols. These are the things that determine outcome.

"Premium turf product"

The turf product matters, but it's maybe 20% of the outcome. The same premium nylon turf installed on a poorly compacted base with uneven infill will perform terribly. The product is the visible layer — don't let it distract you from asking about what's underneath.

"X years in the turf industry"

General landscape turf installation (backyards, pet areas, playgrounds) is a different discipline than putting green construction. Installing a flat lawn requires basic turf-laying skills. Installing a putting green that performs like a real course requires engineering knowledge about slope, drainage, compaction, and speed calibration. Ask specifically how many putting greens they've built and how they verify performance.

The Right Questions to Ask Any Installer

Before hiring a putting green installer — whether franchise, independent, or anyone in between — ask these questions:

  1. "Do you own a stimpmeter, and what speed will my green be?" If they can't give you a number, they don't measure. If they don't measure, they can't guarantee performance.
  2. "What compaction standard do you compact your base to?" The answer should involve a plate compactor and a percentage (95%+ is the standard). Hand tamping is not adequate for putting green base work.
  3. "Can I visit a putting green you installed 3+ years ago?" New installations always look good. What matters is how they hold up over time. A quality base and proper drainage maintain performance for years. A poor base shows problems within 12-18 months.
  4. "Do you use your own crew or subcontractors?" Consistency and accountability matter. Subcontracted crews have no relationship with the homeowner and limited accountability for long-term outcomes.
  5. "What does your warranty specifically cover?" A warranty on the turf product alone is meaningless if the base fails. Ask if the warranty covers base construction, drainage performance, and speed consistency — not just fiber degradation.
  6. "How do you design the slope and break?" If the answer is "we can make it flat or add a little slope" rather than a detailed discussion of grade percentages, break directions, and cup positioning relative to slopes — they're not building a practice green, they're laying carpet.
