Turf Installation Timeline: What to Expect
One of the first questions every customer asks is "how long will this take?" It’s a fair question—your yard is going to be a construction zone during the installation, and you want to know when it’ll be finished. Here’s a realistic timeline for the entire process, from first contact to final walkthrough, for a typical residential installation in Georgia.
Initial Consultation: Day 1
The process starts with a phone call or form submission, followed by an on-site consultation. During the site visit, we measure the area, assess soil conditions, check drainage patterns, identify any challenges (slopes, tree roots, underground utilities, access limitations), and discuss product options. This visit typically takes 30-60 minutes. You’ll receive a detailed written proposal within 1-3 business days.
Proposal and Product Selection: Week 1-2
After you receive the proposal, you’ll review the scope, pricing, and product options. We provide large turf samples so you can see the products in your actual yard, under your lighting conditions. Most homeowners take a few days to a week to make their selection and approve the proposal. If HOA approval is needed, add 2-4 weeks for the submission and approval process.
Material Ordering and Scheduling: Week 2-4
Once the proposal is approved and deposit received, we order materials. Turf is typically available within 1-2 weeks from our suppliers. During this time, we schedule the installation, call Georgia 811 for utility locates (required by law before excavation), and coordinate any necessary equipment delivery. Total lead time from approval to installation start is usually 2-3 weeks, though this can vary by season—spring and early fall are our busiest times, and lead times may extend to 3-4 weeks.
Installation Day 1: Excavation and Base Prep
The first day of physical work is the most disruptive. We remove existing grass and soil to the required depth (typically 3-6 inches), haul away excavated material, install weed barrier fabric, and begin aggregate base installation. For a typical 1,000-2,000 sq ft residential project, Day 1 involves a mini excavator or skid steer, a dump truck for soil removal, and a crew of 3-4 people. It’s noisy, dusty, and there will be equipment and material in your driveway and yard.
Installation Day 2: Base Completion and Turf Laying
Day 2 focuses on completing and fine-grading the aggregate base, compacting to proper density, and beginning turf installation. The turf rolls are brought to the site, cut to fit, positioned, and seaming begins. For a straightforward project, the turf may be fully laid by end of Day 2. For complex projects with multiple seams, curves, or features like putting greens, the turf laying may extend into Day 3.
Installation Day 2-3: Finishing
The final phase includes completing all seams and securing all edges, trimming turf to fit precisely around obstacles (trees, fence posts, patio edges), installing landscape edging at all perimeter transitions, applying infill material and brushing it into the turf fibers, and final inspection and touch-up. Infill application is the last visible step—the turf looks slightly different before and after infill. The infill settles the fibers into their natural position and gives the turf its final, realistic appearance.
Typical Total Installation Time
For a standard residential project (1,000-3,000 sq ft of turf), the on-site installation takes 2-3 days. Smaller projects (under 1,000 sq ft) may be completed in a single day. Larger or more complex projects (putting greens, multi-zone installations, challenging terrain) may take 3-5 days. Commercial projects can take 1-3 weeks depending on scale.
From first phone call to final walkthrough, the entire process typically takes 4-6 weeks. The on-site work is the shortest part—most of the timeline is consultation, approval, material ordering, and scheduling.
Weather Delays
Georgia weather can affect the installation timeline. We don’t install during heavy rain because wet conditions prevent proper base compaction—compacting wet aggregate over Georgia’s clay soil creates an impermeable layer that ruins drainage. Light rain doesn’t usually stop work, but heavy or sustained rain may push the schedule by a day or two. We monitor weather closely and communicate proactively about any schedule adjustments.
When Can You Use It?
You can walk on the turf immediately after installation is complete. Light use (walking, sitting) is fine right away. We recommend waiting 24-48 hours before heavy use (playing, running, placing furniture) to allow seam adhesive to fully cure and infill to settle. After that 48-hour window, the turf is ready for full, unrestricted use—and it’ll stay that way for the next 15-20 years.
