A real putting green isn't just turf glued to the ground. In Georgia, the build that holds up to red clay, summer thunderstorms, and heat-soak is: 4–6 inches of compacted aggregate base over a permeable subgrade, shaped contours rolled to a uniform 11–13 stimp speed, nylon tour-grade putting yarn (not cheap polypropylene), kiln-dried silica infill brushed to spec, and regulation-cut cups with Tour-style flagsticks. Cheap installs skip 2–3 of those steps and roll like a 6 stimp doormat within a season.

Georgia red clay holds water and heaves. We excavate 6–8 inches, stabilize with GAB (graded aggregate base) compacted in 2-inch lifts to 95% Proctor density, then crown the surface 0.5–1% so water sheets off instead of pooling. If you're on a slope or near a downspout, we add a French drain ribbon under the green.
This is where most installers fail. Real greens have shape — gentle ridges, subtle break, fall-away edges around cups. We hand-shape with a screed and laser level the cup zones to a 1–2% grade so balls actually fall in. Photograph any green and look at the slope toward the cup; that's the part nobody copies.
We use nylon tour-style yarn at 0.5–0.625" pile height, dual-stitched, with UV-stable colorant rated 8/8 on the Blue Wool Scale. Polypropylene 'putting turf' from box stores fades, mats, and rolls slow within 18 months. The price difference is roughly $1.50/sq ft — and it's the difference between a green that lasts 15 years and one that lasts 3.
Kiln-dried 30/40-mesh silica sand, brushed in with a power brush at 2.5–3 lbs/sq ft, then triple-rolled with a 1,500-lb roller. That's what locks in the stimp reading. Skip the rolling and your green plays slow no matter how nice the yarn is.
Regulation 4.25-inch cups with brass collars, set on PVC sleeves so you can rotate pin positions. We surround the green with 1.5-inch fringe yarn (for a chip-and-run approach), and most clients add a small 8x12 chipping pad in heavier-pile turf behind the green for short-game practice.
